Author Kentrell Martin Inspires Heritage Elementary Students with Storytelling and American Sign Language

Heritage Elementary School students eagerly gathered in the library for a special visit from author Kentrell Martin, whose story Shelly Goes to the Zoo offered not only an engaging tale but also an interactive lesson in American Sign Language (ASL). As they journeyed through the book, students learned 30-40 ASL signs, mastering everything from animal names and colors, to numbers and greetings like “How are you?”

“I really appreciated how Mr. Martin kept the students engaged throughout the entire session, whether interacting directly with him or with each other,” Principal Dr. Blakley Wallace said. “Right from the start, they began using ASL, and by the end of the session, they could hold conversations with one another.“

Growing up with a Deaf brother, Martin saw how the world viewed Deaf people. He created Shelly’s Adventure series as a company that will play a part in helping bridge the gap between the Deaf and the hearing worlds. Now he travels the country reading his books and teaching ASL to students.

“Representation matters immensely in helping all students see themselves reflected in the stories they read and the role models they encounter,” Dr. Wallace added. “When students witness authors of color sharing their unique perspectives, it enriches their understanding of different cultures and experiences, broadening their worldview and nurturing empathy. It helps students appreciate that people of all identities, including diverse races, ethnicities, and abilities, contribute to our world in meaningful ways.”

The author also tailored his lesson to each grade. Simplifying it for the younger students and widening the vocabulary for the older kids. Students practiced what signs they learned with a peer, then Martin called some students up to demonstrate having a conversation in ASL and, by the end, he quizzed the entire grade on what signs they had mastered.

“This experience not only supports cultural awareness and language diversity but also builds a foundation for a more inclusive community where differences are celebrated, and every student's potential to connect and contribute is recognized,” Dr. Wallace said.
